On November 10, 2015 an investigation examined by the Geisinger Health System in Danville have discovered that heart damage could be linked to obesity in kids from ages 8 to 18. Brandon Fornwalt and his team used MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) to take photos of 40 kids hearts. The children were between ages 8 to 18. Half of the children were obese and the other half had a healthy weight. From the MRI photos the team could see that 40 percent of the obese side had enlarged hearts that interfered with pumping blood to the rest of the body. The side with healthy weight had none of these problems. But it’s not in all obese children, it’s for the obese kids who sit on the couch all day. Since 1960 the obesity in kids has tripled this is warning to us to get a least 1 hour of activity a day.  “As a society, we need to find ways to make sure these rates start dropping,” says Brandon Fornwalt.

This article grabbed my attention because it’s linked to kids. Obesity can be bad but I never knew that it could be linked to heart damage. I think I agree with what the scientists came up with because 40 percent doesn’t seem like a coincidence. This connects a little bit on what we are doing because the heart pumps blood to different parts of the body which makes our body grow. Kinda like a plant collects nutrients from the roots which creates the initial growths. This affects society huge because it shows how parents could take care of their kids better. Also, it is telling kids to get outside and exercise.

  1. This is really interesting. I really like how you put in the part where they looked at kids hearts after they had heart damage. I never knew that you could become obese by just having heart damage. I also like the fact about since 1960 people have been getting bigger. This is really good.

  2. I think that it makes sense that it could effect your heart because you would be putting so much strain on it that eventually it could damage it. Great job!

  3. Great job Will! I am very interested in this subject, especially how we all could help with solving the growing obesity in kids today. In theory, if all people did get at least one hour of exercise a day, then would most heart problems be solved?? That is incredible to me. I was also wondering if you knew if adult obesity had to do with their heart problems. Logically it would, but I am just curious if for some reasons it is only in kids. Great report on current events!

  5. Wow! That is really cool. I would think that if kids did get one hour of activity, then the obesity level would probably go down. However, what is inspiring this kids to get outside and exercise? If we could find something to do that, then I think the problem would really be solved. All in all, that was a very interesting topic!

  6. I did the same topic and it is cool to compare my information to yours and see what some similarities in our research. I would also like to remark that this is a very well written paper it has a lot of good knowledgeable sentences and is very insistful.

  7. This is a very interesting subject. I never thought of that people that are obese could have heart damage until I read this post. Great job Will. If kids exercised everyday could heart damage in kids be cured?

  11. This is really cool I didn't know that obese kid shad bigger hearts than people with normal weight and that aren't obese. What would happen if the obese kids started to exercise more than one hour what would happen.
